Warrior Queens - of India

Warrior Queens Of India

If you had to sit back and think of the freedom fighters that won India her present status of a free Republic, the names that would pop into our minds would consist predominantly of men. Being a part of a patriarchal society, the men always occupy the foreground, leaving little recall value to the names of the women who fought just as hard, dedicated as much of their being to the purpose of a free India. Here we pay tribute to the women who stood strong and played an integral part in making India the proud Republic she is today!

The ladies took to battling for their nation's freedom in the early 19th century, with Bhima Bai Holkar and Rani Chanamma of Kittur who fought bravely against British forces for the honour of their states.

Their example inspired the lady who has gone down in history as the Warrior Queen who fought like a man, as ironic as that sounds! Rani Lakshmi Bai, the wife of Gangadhar Rao, the head of the state of Jhansi who led the troops in war against the British who slew her husband, refused her wishes of adopting a legal heir and did their best to impose the imperial rule on her state. She died as any brave warrior would choose to meet the end, head on and in battle. The tales of courage have given her a permanent residence among the famous freedom fighters and in our hearts.

Sarojini Naidu, the Mahatma's trusted lieutenant in the Salt Satyagraha and the Civil Disobedience movement, the poet who translated her passion for verse into a drive for freedom. She embraced the cause of women and the minorities and was never afraid of expressing her views, as was Kasturba Gandhi, fondly called Ba, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's wife who heralded the cause of Satyagraha and was among the few who led the masses into believing in the idea of freedom. During this period, Aruna Asaf Ali was the woman who proved the might of the pen in the battle for freedom, publishing bulletins, editing monthly journals that spread the word of a free India among the masses.

From leading a guerrilla army comprising children, to becoming a member of the Indian National Congress and finally to rule the country from the seat of the Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi remains a respected figure in the annals of Indian History. She took the traditional image of the Indian Woman a step further to prove the intellectual and administrative capabilities of a woman. A staunch believer in the secular ideals of the newly created nation, she fought communalism, obscurantism and religious fundamentalism and pushed the country towards a more stable social and economic future.

Among the other women who provided the freedom movement its support pillars, Kamala Nehru, Vijaylakshmi Pandit, Madam Cama and Padmaja Naidu shine brightest because of their fervour and leadership capabilities, which when combined with the efforts of the millions involved in the freedom movement, won India her independence
