Mahendra Singh Dhoni has seen it all
Ranchi, March 15: From his under construction house coming under attack in the aftermath of India`s defeat to Bangladesh in a World Cup match to his name not figuring in the electoral rolls, former cricketers marvel at Team India captain MS Dhoni`s fortitude in taking them in his stride.
"Such things should not have been happening to an outstanding guy like Dhoni," said former Bihar and East Zone captain Venkatram.
"But I have seen him handle pressure. Whatever the off field distractions he is always consistent and focussed on the field," said Venkatram, who was Jharkhand`s coach when Dhoni`s exploits were coming to the fore at the Ranji Trophy level.
Former cricketers failed to understand how the name of Dhoni and that of his family did not figure in the Lok Sabha electoral rolls earlier.
"I hope in future officials will take extra care whenever they find the surname Dhoni in any document to avoid harrassment to the jewel of Jharkhand," said another former East Zone captain, Adil Hussein, under whom Dhoni had played for some time.
Former East Zone captain KVP Rao referred to the legal hassles that occurred when there were objections to a swimming pool being built at his under construction house, fearing water scarcity in the area.
"This could have been averted if his neighbours were a bit more understanding. I feel astonished at some of the things which happened," Rao said.
The case was withdrawn last year after the high court pulled up the petitioners.
This was not all, Dhoni was fined by the traffic police in Ranchi for driving a car with tinted glass windows three years ago as he feigned ignorance about the rule and the bureacratic red tape that his application for a 9 mm pistol license led to.
Dhoni, who was awarded the `Jharkhand Ratna` in 2007, was asked to produce a character certificate before his application was forwarded to the Union Home ministry for clearance.
Former Test cricketer Ramesh Saxena said "mistakes do happen, but should not be repeated."
There was also the matter of the district administration unilaterally announcing that Dhoni would lead the `School chalo abhiyan` without speaking to him putting him in an embarrassing situtation in 2006 before an official statement was issued saying there had been a communication gap.
To top it all, there were threat to his family. "This was the worst," said Saxena.
"Is there anyone who does not know Dhoni? He is our pride. He put Ranchi and Jharkhand on the cricketing map and his midas touch has taken India to new heights."
