Do You Know?

Everyone has heard of the Indian champs winning the Twenty20 Cricket Championship. They have been covered by every TV channel, radio channel,
But here is a little known fact...a story that can motivate the most sceptical of us and yet fins no mention in any of the
mainstream newspapers or channels.

The under-14 rugby team of India, comprising of tribal boys from far flung places in Orissa brought us honor by winning the International School Rugby Tournament in London this month.

Here are a few facts that make this feat extraordinary:

- The captain Murmu and his team hail from some of the most backward areas of Orissa.

- The boys started playing rugby barely four months ago.

- They practised for more than almost five hours every day, morning and evening

- The players didn't even have valid birth certificates need for passports, for which the team nearly didn't   make it to the Championship.

- Some of the boys first wore shoes a few years ago.

- Barring one or two who speak broken Hindi, the rest of the team speaks only Oriya.

- Not used to the cold weather, the boys often got sick travelling in buses and trains, but it never stopped   them.

And here is what their Englsih coach Walsh had to say about the players who stayed with host families in England. “They made such an impression that there were lots of tears when they left,” said Walsh. “Nobody had a bad word to say about the boys; they were tremendous ambassadors for India.”
